Meet Our Crew: Firefighter Adam Magg
The town of Orrville, Ohio, has a smaller population than the City of Georgetown, but it has sent three of its sons south to serve.
Adam Maag, 25, is a firefighter/paramedic at Midway Fire Rescue. His co-workers include fellow Orrville natives Matthew Baldwin and Scott McGuire, Maag graduated Orrville High School in 2008 and went to college, for a short time.
“I didn’t really like,” Maag said of his college experience. “I had a hard time taking classes that I saw no real-life application to what I was learning.”
Then he got some advice from his father.
“My dad said, ‘Why don’t you try the fire service? I think you’ve got a good skill set for it,’” Maag said.
He took his fire and EMT training at Columbus State Community College in Columbus, Ohio, and then earned an associate’s degree in emergency services from Stark State College in North Canton, Ohio.
Maag did some EMS work in Orrville before coming to Midway in October of 2012.
“I knew I wanted to be a career firefighter at a combination department,” Maag said. “This was my first opportunity.”
He loves that Midway is a combination department at the beach, has nice equipment and good people to work with.
“I work with great people,” Maag said. “These guys are my friends, my family, my best friends.”
Maag can drive all the apparatus except the tower truck and has completed hazmat training.
He said he doesn’t dwell on best or worst experiences.
“I take everything one call at a time and learn from every call,” Maag said.
But he’s also not thinking too far down the road.
“I’m in no hurry to promote,” Maag said, “I’m totally happy where I’m at right now.”
What the key to professional success?
“Take things day by day, focus on the basics,” Maag said. “Get to work early with a good attitude.”
Maag lives in Surfside Beach with his girlfriend, Jessica, who is a nurse at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital.
His hobbies involve “anything outdoors”: hunting, fishing, hanging out at the beach and taking snowboarding trips.
He’s also an avid Cleveland Browns fans.
Maag’s future plans include buying a house, getting married and having a family.
